Scratch Art Tiles
Lesson Objective: SWBAT use tools to create a design and transfer onto scratch art paper.
Essential Skill to be Mastered: To create a tiled design using 20 different patterns and transfer onto scratch art paper.
I Can Statement: I can create a design, transfer the design, and carefully scratch that design onto scratch art paper.
Teaching Strategy: To start this project I show the students a drawing of tiled designs and ask them to compare them to the textured tiles they just did. I then ask if anyone knows what scratch art is. After I show them how after the tiles are drawn they are transfered to special paper in which they will create their designs after they have been transfered. I model each step of transferring the designs and how to scratch the designs into the scratch paper. I then give the students a tile handout and have them create 20 different designs making sure to tell them not to make them too small like they did the textures. After I am satisfied with each individual students designs (I check them all for craftsmanship), then I give them the scratch art paper and have them sign for a scratch art pencil. I will use guided practice extensively throughout the project to ensure they are following directions that are written on the board.
Materials:
8 1/2 x 11 tiled handout
8 1/2 x 11 scratch art paper
Scratch art pencil
Pencil
Pen
Ruler
Instructions:
1. Draw one different design in each of the 20 tiles on the handout.
2. After drawings are done tape the paper (top side) onto a sheet of scratch art paper.
3. Using a ruler and a pen and pressing kind of hard trace over all the tile lines to transfer onto the scratch art paper (it will leave an impression).
4. Using the scratch art pencil scratch over the tile lines hard enough to scratch off the black but not hard enough to scratch through to the white.
5. Transfer one tile at a time to scratch art paper and scratch the one at a time.
